A volunteer program for high schoolers to get involved in climate engagement. The program also holds several workshops throughout the summer.
Additional Information:
Time commitment is flexible but those who regularly attend meetings and events have a chance to become peer leaders

Gowanus Canal Conservancy
Deadline: March 2023
A paid apprenticeship during the spring and summer where high school students can learn about environmental stewardship, nursery maintenance, green infrastructure, and urban conservation work through classroom lessons, fieldwork and training, and trips. Apprentices also gain knowledge about ecology, stormwater management, urban forestry, environmental justice, waste management, urban design, and horticulture.

New York Botanical Garden

A 6-month internship for high school students to learn about plant science, educate families and children visiting the Garden, and lead hands-on activities.
Additional Information:
There are 2 internship sessions in a year: fall session and spring session
The 2023 Spring session takes place from February to June
Shifts are 4.5 hours long and take place on weekends
Accepted applicants must complete 125 hours of volunteer service within the 6 months to receive a certificate and/or letter of recommendation
Accepted applicants must attend all 4 training days
Application materials include a group interview, short-answer essays, and 2 references.
Wave Hill

A paid internship for high school students to learn about ecology through field-based coursework, hands-on activities, and team-building activities such as building and maintaining woodland trails, removing invasive plant species, shoring up eroded slopes, and helping to document the process of restoring the disturbed woodland toward a more balanced state.
Additional Information:
Takes place during the summer (Monday through Friday, 9 AM - 5 PM)
Students who complete the internship receive a $1,800 compensation and 3 college credits
Interns who successfully finish the internship will be considered for future participation

Open to rising juniors and rising seniors
Applicants must be at least 16 years old and eligible to work in NYC
In order to apply, students must apply to SYEP* listing Children’s Arts & Science Workshops, Inc. (Bronx) or The Children's Aid Society as their provider
*Students do not have to be accepted into SYEP to take part in this internship

A 14-month paid internship where high school students can gain ecology knowledge through hands-on activities, science research, forest restoration, field trips, and college-level classes.
Additional Information:
Phase I (First Summer): Field trips and foundational knowledge building (Monday through Friday, from 9 AM to 5 PM) with classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays
Phase II (Academic Year): Workshops (Saturdays, from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM), with community service opportunities available after school and during school breaks
Phase III (Second Summer): Research projects (Monday through Friday, from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM)
Students who successfully complete the internship receive $3,500 in compensation (stipends, merit scholarships, and transportation benefits), 9 college credits, career and college advice, and access to Wave Hill’s alumni network

The Ranger Conservation Corps Internship
